Dad stole script pad, robbed pharmacy

A FATHER'S life had spun so out of control he robbed a Brisbane pharmacy at knifepoint after it was revealed he stole a prescription from the nurses' station at the Brisbane hospital where he worked.

Jamie Patrick Raines, 41, had lost his marriage, his twin boys, his home and when his job was in jeopardy he stole $900 in cash and eight boxes of opiate-based pain medication from an Upper Mount Gravatt pharmacy before fleeing to Victoria to see his family.

Crown legal officer Rebecca Graham told Brisbane District Court yesterday how Raines had alerted management at Greenslopes Private Hospital about the unattended pad, which was supposed to be locked up, at a nursing station on December 4 last year.

She said when the pad was still there later he decided to take one, fill it out with his own details and then filled the script at a nearby chemist for drugs he had been taking since having 40 kidney stones removed mid-2011.

Ms Graham said the pharmacist later queried the handwriting with the prescribing doctor and Raines received a phone call from the hospital about the forgery and fraud.

She said the next day he drove to Village Discount Pharmacy where he waited in his car for some time before he entered, said "This is a robbery" and pulled out a knife.

Raines still had $600 in his wallet and some of the medication when he was caught in Victoria and extradited to Queensland.

Defence barrister Ruth O'Gorman said her client had been abusing prescription drugs as he watched his life fall apart and was in a desperate situation.

She said his marriage fell apart after countless months trying to care for baby twins, one with serious heart complications after birth.

Raines was sentenced to three years' jail with immediate parole, having already spent 176 days in custody since his extradition.

Judge Kerry O'Brien said Raines' behaviour was "probably attributable to the desperation of your perceived situation at the time".
