Cyclone Narelle downgraded as winds, waves hit WA Coast

WINDS and waves battered Western Australia's coast on Sunday but residents were spared from the brutal conditions Cyclone Narelle was expected to bring.

The tropical storm was downgraded from a category five to three and had changed its track to move parallel to the coast rather than make landfall.

Residents living on the Pilbara Coast between Onslow and Cape Cuvier were warned wind gusts of up to 100km could be expected late Sunday.

At the time of going to press, no major damage or injuries had been reported.
