A CYCLIST in his 50s was trapped under a car after being struck while riding along a Brisbane footpath.

He was taken to Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital with life-threatening injuries after being hit at about 7pm while cycling in Gordon Park on Thursday.

Police believe the cyclist was travelling eastbound along the footpath on Stafford Road near Gordon Street when he struck a vehicle exiting a driveway.

He was trapped beneath the vehicle for "a period of time", according to a police statement.

The 26-year-old male driver of the car was not physically injured.
