Tour de France opens to chaos and confusion

IT was supposed to be the glorious opening stage to the centenary edition of the Tour de France, instead it was chaos, carnage and confusion.

Everything seemed to be headed towards a relatively straightforward and widely-anticipated sprint finish, until the bus belonging to the Australian-owned Orica-GreenEDGE team jammed under the archway above the finish line.

Race officials desperately tried to dislodge the vehicle as the peleton closed on the finish.

An initial announcement was passed to the riders that the stage would finish 3km back down the course, but then the wheels of the bus were deflated and it was able to be pushed off the course.

The finish line was then re-instated to its original position, only for several top riders, including Alberto Contador and sprint stars Mark Cavendish, Peter Sagan and Andre Greipel to get caught up in the first major crash of the race.

Fortunately none received any time penalties.

The stage was won by Germany's Marcel Kittel (Argos-Shimano).

The second stage was a 156km ride across Corsica from Bastia to Ajaccio.
