Curnow makes a late push for Rising Star award

CARLTON forward Charlie Curnow could equal the record for the latest nomination to win the Rising Star should his stellar end to the season be capped with the honour on Friday.

Sydney's Callum Mills broke new ground last year when he won the Rising Star, despite being made to wait until round 16 for his nomination.

However, Curnow could equal that record this season, having finished the season with a flourish after being nominated for his round 16 performance against Melbourne.

The versatile Blues forward averaged 17 disposals and 7.3 marks per game across the final 10 matches of the season, kicking 12 goals across that period.

It has put him firmly in contention to claim Carlton's first ever Rising Star award, with the talented teenager one of five Blues to be nominated throughout the season.

His odds have firmed to $7.50 with Crownbet as a result of his impressive conclusion to the year, with Hawthorn defender Ryan Burton still a short-priced favourite at $1.40.

Essendon defender Andrew McGrath and Port Adelaide midfielder Sam Powell-Pepper are also in the hunt, with the award likely to be a four-horse race come Friday's ceremony.

Burton will be hoping to become Hawthorn's third Rising Star winner and its first since Sam Mitchell in 2003, while McGrath will be hoping to follow in Dyson Heppell's footsteps. Port Adelaide has enjoyed two winners, most recently Danyle Pearce in 2006.
