Croc shock as '4m' beast shows up in Queensland waters

A LARGE saltwater crocodile has been caught on camera floating at the Port of Townsville.

The curious reptile was seen about 7am by the operations team, who then alerted management and workers in a nearby boat.

The animal, believed to be at least 4m, floated on the surface of the water for about 20 minutes alongside berth four in the swing basin before disappearing.

Port of Townsville spokeswoman Sharon Hoops said it was the largest crocodile they had seen in and around those waters for a while.

"We have a few crocodile sightings at the Port every year because of the nice calm water," she said.

"It's not uncommon for us to see other wildlife like big fish and dolphins."

The sighting was reported to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection.
