CQU research efforts receives top marks in Australia
CQUniversity has achieved its highest ever ratings in the Commonwealth Government's periodic assessment of Australian research.
The 2015 Excellence for Research Australia (ERA) results showed that CQUniversity was conducting research rated as at, above, or well above world standard, in 14 different research categories.
This is a remarkable improvement from just five years ago when CQUniversity only attained this level in three research categories.
CQUniversity's dramatic leap in research performance has been underpinned by record investments in research facilities and personnel, an innovative research strategy, and tremendous success in securing highly competitive national research grants.
CQUniversity's Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman welcomed the latest ERA results, explaining that the success validates the University's sharp focus on research informed by industry and community collaboration.
"What we have seen with the three ERA assessments conducted over the past five years has been a consistent acceleration of CQUniversity's research strengths in line with our focus on industry and community engagement.
"We have now established ourselves as research leaders in areas such as Psychology, Agriculture & Vet Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Nursing, Engineering, Medical & Health Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Public Health & Health Services.
"Having so many research areas recognised by the Commonwealth Government as above or well above world standard is a tremendous reward for the University and our many talented researchers.
"However we are only just getting started. Our research momentum has us firmly on a trajectory that will see us emerge as one of Australia's truly great universities. And we plan to take our communities and industries along with us on this remarkable ride.
"These results are also a wake-up call to the rest of Australia. I think we are really beginning to challenge entrenched perceptions that highly successful innovation and research can only be found at metropolitan universities. I also congratulate the other regional universities that had good success in ERA who are also helping to challenge these perceptions," Professor Bowman said.
ERA is administered by the Australian Research Council and is a national research evaluation framework to identify and promote research excellence across the full spectrum of research activity in Australia's higher education institutions.
The ratings are determined and moderated by committees of distinguished researchers, drawn from Australia and overseas. The unit of evaluation is broadly defined as the Field of Research (FoR) within an institution based on the Australia and New Zealand Standard Classification (ANZSRC). Ratings are administered along a scale of one to five, with five being classified as 'well above world standard'.
