Father-son duo take home same stockman trophy
CELEBRATIONS are going off for Rockhampton cowboys David and Joshua Smith, the only father-son duo to have taken home the same stockman trophy.
Joshua took out the prestigious Curley Cattle Transport Classic at the 2015 Cloncurry Stockman's Challenge last week, riding the horse Mr Freckles Chic.
David won the same challenge in 2002 on the horse Leo's Mister Lena, making them the only father and son to have won the event.
Continuing the winning streak, Joshua also won the Ernst Henry Mining Open Challenge on Playin it Lucky and was the overall winner of the 2015 Stockman's Challenge Classic Premiership on the young colt, Reys Dual Oak.
Joshua said he was thrilled with his success.
"This is definitely the highlight of my career so far," Joshua said.
He had been competing at Cloncurry for 15 years, and it was something he always wanted to win.
"It was a great feeling also to bring back the same horse that I rode at Cloncurry in 2003, and win the open challenge as well. For us, it is a real family sport," he said.
Joshua's wife and three children have also travelled the country with him to watch him compete.
He commended his father David as a great horseman and the reason he fell in love with the sport.
The event attracted hundreds of competitors from across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and the Northern Territory.
