Convicted robber jailed for carrying sawn-off rifles in car

A MAN previously jailed for an armed robbery has been found with two sawn-off firearms in his car.

Michael John Madrid, 44, pleaded guilty in Mackay Magistrates Court to possessing shortened firearms, possessing amphetamine and possessing rounds of ammunition.

On May 18, 2015, police attended a residence in Mareeba, at the Atherton Tableland. Madrid's mother told police he had left and was residing in Mackay.

Police conducted checks and found Madrid had failed to report his change of address.

On January 29 this year, police from the Special Emergency Response team located the man in a car outside Terry White Chemist at Andergrove.

Magistrate Nerida Wilson said the man was "extracted" from the vehicle, and when questioned, had told police there was a loaded firearm inside the car.

Police searched the car and found a loaded, manually shortened air rifle and a shortened semi-automatic rifle, as well as 22 rounds of 0.22 calibre ammunition and seven rounds of shotgun ammunition.

Police also found a quantity of amphetamine.

Ms Wilson said that in 2005 Madrid had been sentenced to five years in prison for entering a dwelling and committing robbery with violence, armed with a shotgun and in company.

"The circumstances of that offending involved 80-year-old occupants of the home along with other members of the family," Ms Wilson said.

"It occurred as a result of the need to pay a drug-related debt."

Ms Wilson said, in sentencing Madrid this morning, a jail term was necessary, considering his criminal history.

Madrid was sentenced to 12 months in prison, but as he had already served 74 days in custody he will be released on January 30 next year.

Convictions were recorded and the fine was referred to the State Penalties Enforcement Registry.
