Controversial principal punishes students for dating

A PRINCIPAL at a top private school in the UK has warned pupils he will give them a bad university reference if they are dating.

Toby Belfield, 45, told staff in an email that "school is not the place for romantic relationships - ever".

He said he was compiling a list of teenage students with partners at the £34,500-a-year ($60,447) Ruthin School in Denbighshire, North Wales.

He wrote: "I STRONGLY disapprove of any boyfriend/girlfriend relationships - and it will ALWAYS affect any university reference I write, meaning any student in a relationship will definitely get a worse reference from me.

"Relationships can start at university - not at Ruthin School."

But some parents said the "narcissistic idiot" should be sacked.

And Dan Jones posted: "Wow! Someone was obviously dumped by the love of his life while in school."

Mr Belfield caused controversy last year after he said he was seeking expulsions as there were too many students at the 750-year-old school.

Helen Thorne of university admissions body UCAS said "performance at school, interest in a subject and related achievements" are taken into account.
