BYERWEN Coal Mine reached a milestone as the JFE Steel and QCoal joint venture announced the mine was going ahead.

The next step will be finalising the mining contractor agreement with Macmahon Services.

The ASX-listed company announced in April it had been selected as the preferred mining contractor to develop Byerwen Coal Mine.

At the time it revealed that QCoal has notified the company of its intention to enter into exclusive negotiations with Macmahon in order to finalise terms and execute a mining services contract.

The contract is still in the negotiation stage.

"Macmahon will now commence mobilisation and other preparatory activities, with its scope of work in the proposed contract expected to include full range open cut mining and bulk earthworks related services for at least three years," the April announcement read.

As for tapping into the near 900 jobs from the proposed mine, Macmahon will advertise those jobs on its website, and through websites and newspapers as they become available. More positions are expected once Macmahon's contract with QCoal has been finalised.
