Coast residents win back $700,000 after bad deal complaints

SUNSHINE Coast residents were awarded more than $700,000 as a result of fair trading disputes last year.

The Office of Fair Trading has revealed that it finalised 1692 complaints from the Sunshine Coast region.

The most common complaint  was related to personal and household good, with 151 disputes, followed by motor vehicle sales (135), car services and repairs (129) and real estate agents (121).

Attorney General Yvette D'Ath encouraged all Sunshine Coast residents to know their rights.

"If you're buying online, make sure you read the terms and conditions carefully, including delivery time-frames and costs," she said.

"If you choose an incorrect item the trader is not obliged to provide you with a refund or replacement, however, many will offer this option as they want to keep their customers happy."

Last year 85 per cent of the consumer complaints conciliated by the Office of Fair Trading were satisfactorily resolved, with $5.4 million worth of repairs, replacements and remedies obtained."
