Clinton camp joins move for vote recount

DEFEATED Democratic Party presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has joined the push to recount votes in Wisconsin after claims online polling could have been hacked.

Green Party nominee Jill Stein launched the action last week. She wants to be sure computer hackers did not skew the poll in favour of successful Republican candidate Donald Trump.

The Clinton campaign joined in on the weekend to count physical votes and not just rely on online polling.

Chief counsel to the Clinton campaign Marc Elias made clear that it would not have taken the route itself without Ms Stein starting the process.

"Because we had not uncovered any actionable evidence of hacking or outside attempts to alter the voting technology, we had not planned to exercise this option ourselves," he said.

"But now that a recount has been initiated in Wisconsin, we intend to participate in order to ensure the process proceeds in a manner that is fair to all sides."

US intelligence agencies determined that the Russian Government had actively interfered in the elections, hacking email accounts.

During the campaign, Russian state propaganda backed Mr Trump, who repeatedly praised Vladimir Putin and excused the Russian President's foreign aggression and domestic repression.

Mr Trump issued a lengthy rebuke of the recount, calling it "ridiculous" and a "scam".

So far Ms Stein has raised close to $8 million to pay for recounts in three states.

The request for a recount was submitted to election authorities in Wisconsin on Friday. If she reaches her goal of raising $9 million in total she will be able to make similar filings to Pennsylvania and Michigan this week.

Mr Trump won all three states, but if the recount favoured Mrs Clinton, the election result would be reversed.

His reaction to the Clinton campaign joining the recount opened with an implied charge of hypocrisy.

"The people have spoken and the election is over," he said.

Ironically, during the campaign, Mr Trump repeatedly called the electoral system rigged.
