An all-round champion cowboy
ROPELEY rodeo sensation Clay Gordon wrestled and tied his way to success at the National Rodeo Finals in Ipswich at the weekend after dominating all his events.
The 19-year-old toppled his opponents to claim the Australian All-round Champion Cowboy title after taking out all his events at the national championships including steer wrestling, rope and tie and team roping.
Clay was ecstatic with the dominant performance but said he had not expected to take out the all-round national title coming up against strong competition from all over Australia.
"I was hoping I would but I didn't think I would go that well," he said.
"I went last year but didn't go too well so it was second year redemption I guess. It feels good to have all your practice pay off in the end.
"It capped off a good year with a great result."
Clay said he now had his sights set on the Warwick Rodeo at the end of next month with the ultimate goal of reaching the pro rodeo finals on the Gold Coast in June next year.
"There are five or six events to go to in the lead up to the Warwick Rodeo," he said. "I don't have a weekend off for the rest of the year."
The national title added to what has been an already successful year for the teen after taking out Rookie of the Year at the National High School Rodeo Association finals in America earlier this year.
The Warwick Rodeo, known to many in rodeo circles as 'Australia's most famous rodeo' will be held from October 28 to 30.
