Choice gives out awards for shonky goods and services

IT'S not often you will find a washing machine, airline and ticket seller grouped in the same category.

But at the Choice Shonky Awards, anything goes.

Consumer watchdog Choice has released the unfortunate winners of their annual Shonky awards, which recognise poor service, misleading claims and advertising and faulty goods.

The Samsung 7kg Samsung SW70SP washing machine took the blue ribbon this year.

Choice found the top-loader used 224 litres of water to wash 3.5 kilograms of clothes, earning the machine a score of 0% for water efficiency.

"With a 4-star official water rating, the Samsung sits mid-pack among its mates but this is calculated using a standard test, not the auto sensor program we tested - and we believe consumers would use," Choice stated.

But increased water usage did not mean a better wash with the washing machine earning a score for dirt removal of only 62%.

A plastic coating for mobiles which claims to turn digital devices to water safe was not far behind the washing machine on the awards list.

Choice stated Liquipel failed various tests, which showed phones with the product fared no better than devices without.

Cleaning product Exit Mould made the list for eroding grout and tiles making them more susceptible to mould while the shonky serving award went to Toblerone.

Apparently the chocolate treat boasts 16 servings but only 15 pieces inside.

Ticket agencies, Ticketek and Ticketmaster, were ridiculed for their excessive surcharges.

Taking the seventh spot on the 2012 Shonky Awards list was Jetset Travelworld Group.

Choice discovered in Travelworld Group's terms and conditions, consumers waived their credit card chargeback rights, which allows them to claim goods and services paid for on the credit card but not delivered.

"Consumers shouldn't have to bear the risk of non-delivery of services effectively recommended by the agent, leaving them to work out any dispute directly with the merchant," Choice claimed.
