Childhood sweethearts for life
A LAIDLEY couple have many reasons to celebrate after reaching their 65 wedding anniversary.
Childhood sweethearts, Arthur and Gladys Reck married on September 7, 1945 and never thought they would celebrate their wedding anniversary with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in attendance so many years later.
The couple's daughter, Marlene Zischke said the day was special to the whole family.
“It's lovely because not many people reach 65 years together,” Mrs Zischke said
“They received letters from the Queen, Governor General, Governor and local dignitaries.
“They were very excited when they received it a couple of weeks before.
“They came with the crown on it and everything and Mum was over the moon.”
Mrs Zischke said her parents deserved the accolade.
“They love having fun, they love laughing and they love jokes,” she said.
“There was a lot of reminiscing, with a slide show we had going.
“They could look at themselves 50 years ago, which was great fun.”
The couple grew up in the Lockyer Valley with Arthur from Linford and Gladys from Grantham.
Mrs Zischke said almost 300 family and friends came to commemorate the marriage.
“They had a church celebration with an extra blessing on their marriage and lots of toasts and speeches afterwards.”
