An ammonia spill has sparked an evacuation in South Townsville.

Emergency services are at the scene of Harbourside Coldstores Townsville on Boundary St after reports of a chemical spill.

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, police and paramedics are evacuating people from the area.

The gas of ammonia can react with acid and oxidising agents and can cause burning to the nose, throat and respiratory tracts.

People are advised to avoid the area.
