Changes mean offshore processing for onshore arrivals

ASYLUM seekers lucky enough to make it as far as the Australian mainland will soon be able to be sent to Nauru or Manus Island for offshore immigration processing.

Under current Commonwealth laws, asylum seekers who arrive onshore must be processed onshore.

But changes to the Migration Act to allow offshore processing for those who arrive onshore are currently before the House of Representatives.

The amendments will put in place a recommendation from the Houston Panel to ensure all irregular maritime arrivals will be treated the same regardless of where they are intercepted.
