UPDATE: Neil St in the Toowoomba CBD will be closed for several days as authorities repair a damaged gas pipeline and washout.

Neil St is closed between Russell and Campbell Sts. 

The pipeline ruptured when parts of the Neil St and Chalk Dr intersection collapsed after a heavy downpour hit about 6.30pm.

Exclusion zones were set up across the CBD by 8.30pm and there were fears the area would have to be evacuated.

Power was cut to 937 properties across the Toowoomba CBD about 10.30pm.   An emergency situation was declared.

Authorities remained at the scene until about 3.30am.

They isolated the gas leak and are working to repair the pipeline.

Neil St is expected to be closed for several days.

10PM: The Toowoomba CBD was put in lockdown after a construction site at Chalk Dr and Neil St collapsed and a major gas pipeline ruptured.

Police and emergency crews set up exclusion zones within Ruthven St, Campbell St, Hume St and Margaret St. 

There were fears that the CBD and homes in Campbell St would have to be evacuated. They were put on hold at about 9.40pm.

An emergent situation was declared and traffic diverted.

Streets around the Chalk Dr and Neil St intersection were closed to vehicles and pedestrians about 8.30pm.

Information suggested that storm activity had caused building materials to collapse and rupture a gas line.

Parts of Toowoomba received more 50mm in just 20 minutes at 6.30pm.

No homes have been evacuated at this stage.

Toowoomba Regional Council staff and authorities are investigating.

Public are advised to follow directions of police and emergency crews.

First signs of trouble

At 5pm today, Toowoomba Regional Council posted damage to the footpath in the area.

Yesterday's storms in Toowoomba have damaged the Neil Street pavement between Chalk Dr and Thomas St." the post read.

"This section of road will be temporarily closed to northbound traffic until Council's repair work is finished. We apologise for any inconvenience to motorists affected by this closure."
