Catcher put off by snake deterrent

THE jury is out on whether or not a popular new electronic "snake repeller" is all hiss and no bite.

Solar powered gadgets that emit ultrasonic vibrations to ward off snakes have been popping up in stores across the Darling Downs, but snake catcher Nathan Garrod suspects they could be a scam.

"I could sell you a rock and tell you it keeps snakes away," he said.

"Just because you don't see any snakes doesn't mean the rock actually works."

Several different models have emerged on the market, each resembling a solar-powered garden light.

The Snake Defence MP Plus is one of the most popular versions and retails for $78 a pop.

The company's website claims each unit covers a 30 metre diameter and changes its vibration and sound every second day to "keep those snakes confused with the changing signal".

Mr Garrod said he would not recommend them until more research was conducted.

"I know of professional snake catchers who have experimented with them and from what I've read of their trials, they really don't work," he said.

"If anything, I would think they would make snakes curious about something new in their territory and they may be inclined to investigate."

Mr Garrod said a Cambooya client had installed several of the units, a Colorbond fence blocked at the ground with timber and illegal bird netting to trap snakes.

"I still get called out there to pull snakes out of the bird netting, so it doesn't seem like they are working," he said.

"There are lots of other bush remedies, from pyrethra to leaving out milk, and some are so far-fetched it's laughable.

"Over the 10 years I've been removing snakes, I haven't seen any of them work."
