Caring for staff helps in manufacturing battle

WHILE Drummond and Kindred Clothing manager David Agnew thinks outside the box to stay in the game, he said the recent closure of local truck trailer factory J Smith and Sons had naturally made him wonder about the future of his own business.

"You start to think you're next," he said.

"We're very fortunate to have survived."

One way the manager keeps his business as competitive as possible is by catering for his staff.

Mothers with children are able to work school hours and when times are quiet, he reverts to three or four-day weeks to save having to lay off any staff.

He said it's all part of not only maintaining a healthy workplace, but trying to preserve the jobs of his staff.

Mr Agnew said he could only image how J Smith and Sons managing director Kerren Smith was feeling, having carried the responsibility of so many people's income.

Mr Agnew said it was a responsibility he worried about himself.
