Campbell taking a break from pool to 'reignite' passion

SWIMMING: Cate Campbell will be taking "long-service leave” and will not be taking part in the world championships in Budapest in July.

Campbell, 24, who will compete in the Australian championships starting in Brisbane on Sunday, said she had been competing since she was about 15 and had earned herself a break from the sport she loved.

"It's coming up to 10 years of competition and most people get long-service leave after 10 years, so I am going to cash in a bit of long- service leave this year,” Campbell said yesterday.

"I just wanted to get back to racing where there isn't any pressure, so I can just enjoy it again.”

Campbell had a forgettable Rio Olympics where she was favourite for individual gold in the 100m freestyle but finished sixth.

She won gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay with sister Bronte but also missed out on a medal in the 50m freestyle, finishing fifth.

Campbell said she now just needed to have some time off.

"Racing when you're little is really fun and I think as you get older there are consequences that hang on your results,” she said.

"So I am hoping to just reignite my love for the sport and take a little break.

"I also feel I am not ready to give 100% in the water just yet and if you're representing your country, you should be willing to give 100%.

"I don't think giving 80% is really worth it and I don't want to take a spot off someone who is willing to give 100%.”

Campbell said her next goal was next year's Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, saying: "By the time that rolls around you can bet I will be giving 100% then.”
