Camp key to Hawthorn’s title success

CAPTAIN Luke Hodge says the seeds for Hawthorn's premiership success were planted during a soul-searching pre-season camp on the Sunshine Coast.

Speaking at the club's awards night in Melbourne on Saturday, Hodge (pictured) made special mention of the week-long stay last December, which followed the Hawks' 2012 grand final loss to Sydney.

"The players had a few very serious meetings up at Mooloolaba," the skipper said. "A lot of questions got thrown around. The main one was, 'have we been hard enough on each other?'

"From that meeting we came up with six behaviours that we believed if we followed them, if we marked each other hard on them, or if we lived by them, that this time next year we would be saluting with the premiership cup."

The non-negotiable rules included having a selfless attitude, doing away with egos, engaging in honest and open conversations, and having a fight to the death attitude, which was on show during the 2013 grand final win over Fremantle.

"So the standards were set and we had no doubt that that meeting was one of the main reasons why both (the club's reserves) Box Hill (in the VFL) and Hawthorn had successful years," Hodge said.

Departing superstar Lance Franklin did not attend the night, though there was a video tribute to the Sydney-bound forward, while retiring premiership players Brent Guerra (2008, 2013), Max Bailey (2013) and Michael Osborne (2008) were also honoured

Defender Josh Gibson took out the Peter Crimmins Medal for best and fairest, winning from Jarryd Roughead and Sam Mitchell. Franklin failed to make the top 10.
