Mackay family devastated by suicide, online memes
A HEARTBROKEN mother is sickened by "cruel" memes that were posted on social media taunting her daughter's suicide.
Sarah Rigby died on Tuesday.
By Wednesday a number of suicide 'memes' had been posted on social media using photos of Sarah.
"It's pretty sick. I'm devastated," Vickie Mason said.
The popular teen was barely a month away from celebrating her 18th birthday with her twin brother Nicholas in March.
"I don't know why she did it. My heart is just broken," Ms Mason said.
She begged for others, who might be feeling lost or helpless, to speak out and ask for help.
Sarah was "quirky", a good athlete and "very kind", she said.
"She was smart, she was talented... always doing things for people," her mother said.
"She was just such a kind, caring little girl."
And she absolutely loved her twin brother. They were the youngest of seven siblings in a close-knit family.
"She was 30 seconds older than her brother and she always told him 'I'm older than you'," Ms Mason said.
Her funeral will be held next Wednesday and will be a true representation of everything Sarah was.
Loved ones and friends have flooded her Facebook page with messages of sorrow, love and goodbye.
Mackay police superintendent Michelle Stenner said the memes were "appalling".
"I was absolutely appalled that someone would take the time to defame a person like that," Supt Stenner said.
"It sets a really bad example."
Ms Mason said she couldn't "comprehend" why a person would want to cause even more pain to an already shattered family with such cruelty.
She was also concerned by the emotions and reactions of other vulnerable teens on seeing the posts.
"They are shattered and then they see this and that makes it all worse," Ms Mason said. "Just let her rest in peace."
