Callers say sex fiend on Coast

AUTHORITIES have unofficially dismissed reports that convicted paedophile Dennis Ferguson is living on the Sunshine Coast.

The Sunshine Coast Daily has fielded numerous calls from people reporting that the serial child sex offender has been spotted in Caloundra over the past few months.

Several residents have contacted the Daily in recent weeks out of fear that Coast police may not be aware of his whereabouts.

Two teenage girls were the latest to report seeing a man who looked like Ferguson.

They said they were followed by a man who looked like the 62-year-old at Sunshine Plaza about 11am yesterday.

The 15-year-olds fled to a friend’s home nearby.

A woman at the house contacted the Daily to relate their story.

The woman said the girls were adamant the man they saw was Ferguson after she showed them photographs of the real Ferguson on the internet.

Ferguson was jailed for 14 years in 1988 for crimes against three young children.

A Caloundra police spokesman said they had received no official complaint about such an incident.

Sunshine Coast police acting superintendent John Maloney said he would not comment when the Daily contacted him yesterday.

The Department of Corrective Services was also unable to provide an official response.

The Daily understands, however, that Ferguson is registered at a NSW address.

He has stringent reporting conditions to police.

Internet social networking site Facebook has previously been blamed for false reports of Ferguson living in Central Queensland and in a Sydney suburb.

A Dennis Ferguson Facebook profile listed an address at Noosa Heads at which he was supposed to be staying.

It is believed to be false.

A Caloundra Neighbourhood Watch member said they had not received any reports of Ferguson being spotted in the area.

In 2008, Ferguson was forced to leave several towns and cities in Queensland due to public hostility and attention from the media.

Ferguson’s last reported address was at a “secret location” in Sydney in March last year.

The media reported at the time that police had taken the unusual step of contacting the convicted paedophile after reports that Ferguson was considering a move to the Hunter Valley.
