Calendar celebrates Sunshine Coast's 50th anniversary

SOME of the Sunshine Coast's most classic images - from beaches to pineapples - are being celebrated in a special calendar released by Sunshine Coast Council today.

The Still Shining - Celebrating 50 Years 2017 cultural heritage calendar is being released as part of next year's 50th anniversary celebrations for the naming of the Sunshine Coast.

"Produced annually and funded by the Heritage Levy, the calendar is a great way to celebrate and remember this region's heritage," Mayor Mark Jamieson said.

"This year, it showcases photos from the 1960s and 1970s drawn from the collections of six winners of the heritage calendar photographic competition and council's own Picture Sunshine Coast collection."

"It showcases the Sunshine Coast during the vibrant 1960s and 70s, including sugar cane trucks on their way to the Moreton Sugar Mill and pineapple picking in the Woombye district.

"Of course it wouldn't be a Sunshine Coast calendar without the inclusion of images featuring our beautiful beaches and waterways.

"Some of us may remember the hoisting of the top onto the Big Pineapple at the official opening of the Sunshine Plantation by the Hon. John Herbert in 1971 - which also makes an appearance in the heritage calendar.

"I would also like to thank the heritage calendar competition winners for sharing photos from their private collections for all the community to enjoy."

The calendar will be available for purchase from council's library branches and Customer Service Centres for $6.
