Cabinet gets younger in Turnbull reshuffle

AUSTRALIA'S new look federal Cabinet has been sworn in at Government House in Canberra following sweeping changes announced at the weekend.

The expanded Cabinet of 21 sees more women and younger faces appointed following Malcolm Turnbull's elevation to the top job last week.

The average age of Cabinet members has dropped from 54 to 51 years in the reshuffle and includes Longman MP Wyatt Roy who becomes one of the youngest assistant ministers in history.

Australia now has its first indigenous minister after Ken Wyatt was promoted to the front bench in the reshuffle.

Mr Turnbull took to breakfast radio and television on Monday in his first series of interviews since becoming prime minister.

He told the ABC his new look Cabinet was based on merit and renewal was important for any organisation.

"You need to have renewal in any organisation and what that means is people who are doing a good job stand aside so that new people can come through, otherwise you get no change," he said.

"It is vital to have a contemporary, 21st-century government and that requires renewal."

Mr Turnbull said he understood the range of emotions former prime minister Tony Abbott must be feeling after being dumped from the top job.

But he said the show must go on.

"I know what it is like to lose the leadership of a political party, it is a very tough business," he said.

"It is a dark, black experience, it is awful, that sense of rejection and I deeply empathise with him.

"It is a rotten time and he will need lots of support from his family and friends."
