Buying fuel earlier in the week will save you at the bowser

STOP buying petrol on Thursday and Friday - it is costing you more.

Research from the University of England looked at the price of filling up the car in 114 Australian towns and cities and found drivers would be better off refuelling on Tuesday if they wanted to save at the bowser.

APN has broken down the findings for 18 locations across Queensland and New South Wales to guide drivers on when to stop and refuel.

Major differences in price are most pronounced in 16 major centres including Brisbane, Sydney and regional Queensland towns of Caloundra, Caboolture, Gold Coast and Ipswich.

The study conducted by UNE professor Abba Valadkhani was based on fuel price data stretching for seven years from January 2005 to April 2012.

It found Thursday and Friday were the most expensive days to fill up the car, while Sunday and Tuesday were almost always the cheapest.

In smaller regional areas, there were regular fluctuations in fuel prices, but these were subtle compared to the ups and downs delivered by city service stations.

For those in Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast, paying the extra 3c for fuel on the priciest day would add about $1.80 to the total for a 60 litre tank.

It may not seem like much, but multiply that by filling up once a week and it adds up to almost $100 a year.

Meanwhile, in Northern NSW, Coffs Harbour drivers have little to gain from shopping around - about 0.4c per litre saving between the cheapest and most expensive days.

The take-home message?

Try to wait until at least Sunday to fill up the car if you missed the Tuesday fuel special.
