Busy mum defending importance of down time

AS A mum, student and Flight Lieutenant at the RAAF base in Amberley, Melissa Moore knows the importance of finding some down time, and is encouraging other busy mums to do the same.

With the support of her husband, Flt-Lt Moore would usually juggle caring for her two children, ages 7 and 9, working her own flexible hours from home or her office at the RAAF base two days a week, as well as completing university assessments for a Master of Project Management.

Despite these commitments, she said she never misses family time and plans to spend Mother's Day taking the day off.

"Be kind to yourself and don't compare your situation to the next person," Flt-Lt Moore said.

"My advice to women wanting to start a family in Defence is to be open and honest with your chain of command and understand the systems available to you.

"Also, regardless of your time out of fulltime service, or the workforce completely, make sure you have linear reports from supervisors to track your development and any additional study or work experience."

She received a lot of encouragement and workplace support when her oldest child, Zane, was born. She said she wanted to do the same for others.

"The flexible work options I was provided nine years ago, and again in 2014 when my daughter Lola was born, have shaped me as a manager in such a positive way."

Flt-Lt grew up in NSW and joined the Air Force as a Supplier in 1999. She later transferred to Air Movements and was promoted to Flight Sergeant before commissioning in 2017.

"Commissioning to become a Logistics Officer was always the long-term goal for me." She said.
