DAVID Barry Jacobsen, who was the lookout during a robbery of a Rockhampton hotel, tried to put police on a false trail with a dodgy phone call.
Jacobsen, 22, had kept watch as a burglar accomplice smashed his way into the Ascot Hotel and stole alcohol early one December morning last year.
A short time later and with the alarm blaring, Jacobsen called the police to report seeing a couple of thieves running from the venue.
He reiterated his story when police arrived.
But following further police inquiries, authorities later found a glass panel at a north Rockhampton home and linked it to Jacobsen.
Yesterday, a remorseful Jacobsen pleaded guilty in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court to one charge of entering premises and committing an indictable offence.
And he went out of his way to apologise to the hotel’s owner, Will Cordwell, , outside the court.
The break-in was one of four in five days at the hotel during the festive Christmas/New Year period.
“I’m very sorry for what I have done,” said Jacobsen, who holds down two jobs and expects to become a father for the third time in October.
“I accept the punishment.”
Magistrate Cameron Press ordered Jacobsen to eight months imprisonment, to be served as an intensive correction order.
Mr Press also ordered Jacobsen pay $695.50 restitution and banned him from the hotel for one year.
A conviction was recorded.
The court had earlier heard Jacobsen had breached his probation for a similar offence in June 2007.
Representing himself, Jacobsen said he had been through a tough time recently.
His payment for the robbery was a bottle of rum.
Speaking outside the court, Mr Cordwell, who is campaigning for magistrates to get tougher on repeat offenders, said Jacobsen had stood up and accepted responsibility.
“He has been given an opportunity now to straighten out his life,” Mr Cordwell said.
“But he has also been warned by the magistrate if he steps out of line again then jail is on the cards.
“Hopefully he can turn his life around.”
