'I knew I couldn't help' Two people, dog killed in Hwy crash

The man who rushed to help an elderly couple after a horrific crash on the Bruce Highway has described the horrific "life-changing" scenes as he tried to help.

An elderly couple and their dog died at the scene of the crash in Guthalungra, 60km north of Bowen, Monday morning.

Police were called to the Bruce Highway about 8.30am after a truck travelling south collided head-on with the couple's sedan travelling north.

First responder Matty Johnson said he was behind a removalist truck at the time, and had rushed to help in what has been the "worst fu--ing day" of his life.

"The worst part was I knew I couldn't have helped the lady in the passenger side," he said.

Mr Johnson said he took a blanket he found in the car and put it over the man. He also held the woman, he said, as she died, and tried to rescue their little dog, which he had seen stuck in the back.

"I dragged her out but it died in a towel."

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

UPDATE 11.30AM

TWO people have been killed in a car and truck crash on the Bruce Highway in Guthalungra, north of Bowen, about 8.30am.

A Queensland Police spokesman confirmed two people, who were in the sedan, have been declared deceased at the scene.

Their pet dog also died.

It is understood the truck was travelling south and the sedan was travelling north when the vehicles collided head on.

The driver of the truck received minor injuries only.

The Forensic Crash Unit are investigating.

UPDATE 10.10AM

TWO people are feared dead after a car and truck collided on the Bruce Highway in Guthalungra, north of Bowen, about 8.30am.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said five people were assessed on the scene near Nobile Rd, but only three will be transported to hospital.

It is understood the other two people are deceased.

Traffic diversions are currently in place.

The Forensic Crash Unit will investigate the crash.

Queensland Police said the incident is still ongoing and traffic is heavy.

UPDATE 9.37AM

THREE people are being treated for minor injuries and two people will not be transported from the scene, a Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman has said.

The northbound lane remains open according to QPS.

It is unknown which hospital the injured people will be taken to.

UPDATE 9.17AM: Queensland Ambulance have confirmed five people are involved in the crash and three people are being assessed.

Queensland Police said the southbound lane of the Bruce Highway is closed. Diversions are currently in place.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services arrived on scene around 9.05am

A CAR has caught fire after a serious crash on the Bruce Highway in Guthalungra.

A Queensland Police spokesman said the crash was "quite serious".

He said a car was on fire after a car and track collided about 8.32am.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said three people are involved and one person is being assessed.
