Passionate biker, family man, dies in tragic crash
THE treacherous and unforgiving Bruce Highway has claimed yet another victim, after police announced the death of a 58-year-old man on Saturday.
At about 6pm on Saturday the Queensland Police Service confirmed the man was killed in a single-vehicle crash at Calliope that took place five hours earlier.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, a QPS spokesperson said.
However, his passenger, a 55-year-old female, survived the crash having sustained serious abdominal injuries.
YESTERDAY 6.30 PM:
Queensland Police Service have said a man has died following a single vehicle traffic crash in Calliope this afternoon.
"Preliminary investigations indicate just after 1pm a motorcycle carrying two people was travelling south along the Bruce Hwy when it left the road approximately 500m south of the Sawmill Rd turn off," the statement read.
A 58-year-old man, who was riding the motorcycle, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
"A 55-year-old female pillion passenger was transported to the Gladstone Base Hospital with non-life threatening injuries," the QPS statement read.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the crash.
A MALE and a female patient have been taken to the Gladstone Hospital via ambulance following a single-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle off the Bruce Hwy.
A QAS spokesperson has confirmed that a 65-year-old man was transported in a critical condition, and a 55-year-old woman who sustained serious abdominal injuries, was also transported.
The female was breathing and stabilised at the scene however, the condition of the male remains unknown.
Calliope Senior Sergeant Shaune English said the pair on the motorcycle were coming south from the highway.
"I have no idea why but for some reason they've come off the highway and wound up where they have...
"(It was) very lucky, they've actually come off the other side of the fire trucks, which is a big ditch, they've ridden across the top of the ditch there.
"It could have been a lot worse, they could have gone head first into the bank and there would be no hope for either of them."
Snr sgt English confirmed that the female involved in the crash was coherent and talking to police after the accident.
The QAS spokesperson said upon arrival, paramedics had to conduct CPR on one of the patients, which is now believed to have been the male.
Emergency services received the call just before 1.15pm to reports of a crash along Sawmill Rd, Calliope.
Two ambulances and two fire crews are on scene.
A towing company truck is on its way to move the motorcycle from the road.
It is believed the crash saw the patients flung off the bike and into nearby tall grass, however, the cause is not yet known.
Traffic is being diverted by police with the southbound lane closed off.
PARAMEDICS are currently on-scene of a single vehicle crash at Calliope.
Emergency services have arrived on scene about 500m from Sawmill Rd, Calliope, at the scene of a single motorcycle involving a driver and the passenger; a male and female.
A QAS spokesperson said one passenger is in a critical condition, with paramedics performing CPR on the patient.
The other passenger has sustained serious injuries, the spokesperson said.
The south-bound lane is closed, with traffic being diverted.
The cause of the crash is unknown at this stage.
