What sparked wild buck’s party brawl
A BUCK'S party descended into chaos in Melbourne after a man allegedly stole a cricket bat from a child and used it to hit a member of the group.
Footage of the incident showed the massive brawl spilling out onto a busy road at Chapel Street in South Yarra over the weekend.
The violent scenes started after a man and woman allegedly started heckling a group of men who were celebrating a buck's party at Bridie O'Reilly's Irish pub
Witnesses said a man approached the group inside the venue and punched one of its members in the face.
Police say the attacker then left the venue before returning with a cricket bat and striking a 65-year-old man.
A shop owner on Chapel St told the Herald Sunthat the man stole the bat from a young child in a nearby 7 Eleven.
The attack prompted members of the buck's party to leap over the barrier and retaliate, sparking a huge brawl.
"Something fuelled the fire and they've gone apes**t," the shop owner said. "The two wanted a beating and they copped a beating. They started it."
Footage of the fight showed at least five men punching and kicking a man in a light shirt.
As more people joined the fight another man was chased onto the street and knocked to the ground in between parked cars and moving vehicles.
Multiple witnesses could be seen trying to intervene and break up the fight, with at least three women being caught up in the brawl.
Passer-bys took shelter in nearby stores as the violence scenes played out on the busy street.
It is believed the man with the cricket bat fled on foot towards Malvern Rd and caught a taxi.
He was thought to have sustained a cut above his right eye.
The 65-year-old man was left with a minor injury to his arm.
Emergency crews were called to the scene with paramedics treating a man in his 20s with cuts to his head, along with a woman also in her 20s.
Investigations are continuing into the incident and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
