Bowditch ends tied for 16th

PEREGIAN Beach’s Steven Bowditch has secured his second top-25 finish of the US PGA season despite a forgettable final day at the Crowne Plaza Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas.

Bowditch ended the tournament at Colonial Golf Club in a share of 16th spot for a $67,000 pay day.

It was his second-best finish since rejoining the tour this year, bettered only by his tie for ninth at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in February.

He finished nine shots behind winner American David Toms after he shot a final-round three-over 73 for an overall four-under 276.

He was the third-best-placed of the Australians, finishing behind John Senden and Rod Pampling and equal with Stuart Appleby.

Despite shooting 72 and 73 in the final rounds, Bowditch managed to finish up the leader board after opening rounds of 67 and 64.

Toms fired a three-under-par 67 to win as Appleby squandered a great chance.

Toms, 44, finished at 15-under to edge out South Korean Charlie Wi (69) by one stroke to claim his 13th tour win, but the first in more than five years.

His victory came a week after a playoff loss to K J Choi at The Players Championship, in his sixth runner-up finish since his last win.

Appleby, playing in the group ahead of Toms and Wi, was at 12 under and only one stroke behind the leaders when he teed off at the 12th.

However, bogeys at 12 and 13 and a triple-bogey seven at the 14th destroyed his hopes as he finished seven over for the final seven holes after playing the front nine in four-under 31.

Appleby finished with a four-over 74 and tied for 16th.

Toms, the 2001 US PGA Championship winner, rallied after squandering a seven-stroke lead from two opening rounds of 62 with a 74 in the third round.
