'Bomb' strapped to car's fuel tank detonated by police

THE police bomb squad has detonated a suspicious device found strapped to a car's fuel tank on the Gold Coast.

Police cordoned off a 100 metre exclusion zone around the Burleigh Heads warehouse on Central Drive after the device was discovered on Monday morning.

A factory worker from the business said staff noticed the device and alerted authorities about 8.30am.

''There was a plastic container filled with powdery sort of stuff, with a two-foot wick sticking out of it,'' production manager Darryl Frankhan told 612 ABC Brisbane.

''Firstly we thought it was a bit of a practical joke but we took it seriously and called the cops and they said evacuate immediately."
