Birds tortured during 'disgusting' kindy attack

STAFF and children are devastated after vandals ransacked the Sandstone Lakes Early Learning Centre's yard; torturing and killing 12 birds and destroying their aviary, ripping out vegie patches and smearing sunscreen through the chicken coop.

The incident occurred last weekend with staff arriving to a heart-breaking scene on Monday morning.

"The damage was quite extensive - we only had two birds left and a few eggs," kindergarden educator Leesa Watson said.

"Our birds were pretty much tortured in the process of it all. We found one that had drowned, feathers and limbs throughout the yard, blood splattered from where they'd hurt them with rocks. It wasn't pleasant."

Leesa said it was difficult to break the news to the children.

"We've obviously not told them the details, we just told them someone came in and let our birds out," she said.

"We have a big program based on animals and nature and anything that happens to do with that is really devastating.

"The kids just love them. They help with the birds all the time. They love going in and seeing the eggs hatch. It's just such a great little program - it's devastating."

Sadly it's not the first time the centre has been targeted.

"This time is the worst, but we've had ducks and chickens stolen, sunscreen smeared everywhere, the hoses have been turned on and the yard flooded," Leesa said.

Outdoor educator Terina Conroy said it was devastating to see the children's hard work destroyed.

"They pulled out some of our plants and our veggie gardens. We all use it for sustainability and in the kitchen too," she said.

"It's all done by the children, the teachers are just here to guide them through.

"It's just a disgrace to come in and to see what the children have done and what we've taught them in the animal breeding programs gone - it's just disgusting."
