You're never too old to wear a bikini: swimwear designer

YOU are never too old to wear a bikini, says Byron Bay swimwear designer Lisa Burke, who is still modelling her own bikinis in her 40s.

Ms Burke has spoken out in support of a 46-year-old Queensland mum, who posted a Facebook photo of herself wearing a bikini in response to being told by a group of young people that she was too old to wear the swimmers

The designer has even offered the mum, Julie Cross, the bikini of her choosing from Burke's swimwear label, Lisa Blue.

Julie Cross's photo and story went viral, reaching more than 3.7 million on the Sunshine Coast Daily's Facebook page alone, and followed another story where a Bundaberg woman received a nasty letter telling her she was too fat to wear a bikini.

"It's ludicrous," Lisa Burke said.

"You are never too old - it's how you feel about yourself and your own body; how comfortable you are within yourself that determines whether you wear a bikini," she said.

"Nobody else should dictate what a woman wears.

"Young women need to realise that they too will be in their 40s and 50s one day and they need to show some respect."

While Ms Burke's swimwear label's peak market is women aged 17-35, she still models bikinis at 46 and gets compliments from younger women for being a role model.

"In the modelling world, I am considered ancient, but I fought against that. I won't conform," she said.

"The younger girls look up to (an older model) as they can aspire to being healthy and happy at an older age.

"I think inner beauty is the most attractive thing; if you feel good about yourself, that will shine through."
