Best of a bad situation
A GROUP of Patrick Estate residents made the best of a bad situation as their homes were surrounded by water during the floods.
Yvonne Hawkins said her home was the highest spot in the area and so was the refuge point for her and her neighbours.
“The farm was completely surrounded by water and although we didn't have any damage, at the time we had no idea when it was going to stop,” she said.
“We could hear the roar of the water, which was the scary part, at night especially.”
She and her neighbours, unable to evacuate decided the safest place to be was on the roof of the Hawkins' shed.
“We had a generator up there, we pitched the tent, which was held down by some garden rocks, mattresses and food because then we had no idea how much longer we were going to be there and thought we might need supplies.
“We even brought the Webber up there with us, but we didn't use it.”
She said the night was restless.
“Some of the fellas were snoring and sleeping on quite well but it started raining when we were up there, which was a bit scary, but you got used to it,” she said.
“In the end though, we were safe and that was the main thing and we managed to have a bit of fun with it and managed to get to know our neighbours a bit better in an unusual situation.”
