GOLF: Big-hitting Bendigo pro Lucas Herbert has taken the Australian contingent at The Open championship to eight after earning his maiden major spot at the Singapore Open.

Herbert, 22, qualified for his first major courtesy after finishing tied for eighth at the Singapore Open on Sunday, won by Masters champion Sergio Garcia.

After a solid home summer which included top-10 finishes at both the Australian open (tied 6th) and PGA (tied 7th) Herbert has taken his solid form in to two starts in Asia and will now tee it up at Carnoustie in July as a reward for his efforts.

"I'm so excited to be heading to The Open, a dream come true," Herbert, ranked a career-high 274, said.

"It's been a big summer, but now I've got an even bigger winter ahead, I'm pumped.

"I played Carnoustie at The Amateur Championship, so I've seen the course in tournament conditions. It's really tough, but I took away a lot experience of playing there and I'll look to draw upon that."

Herbert made massive inroads during the home summer and was leading the Australian Open by two shots going in to the back nine of the final round before being overrun by fellow young Cameron Davis, who will also play The Open.

Jason Day, Adam Scott, Marc Leishman, Matt Jones, Brett Rumform and 1991 winner Ian Baker-Finch are the other Aussies already locked in for The Open.
