THE British Broadcasting Corporation's director-general has resigned after a program falsely accused a former British politician of child abuse.

Last week the BBC's Newsnight program aired a incorrect allegation a former senior politician had sexually abused children, Reuters reported.

The BBC's chairman condemned the story as shoddy journalism and BBC director-general George Entwistle resigned.

In a statement he read out to media on Saturday, he said as editor-in-chief he was ultimately responsible for all content.
