Visit turns into call of the wild

ELISE Barry went to her bathroom to answer a call of nature and discovered that nature had already arrived.

Ms Barry, of Verrierdale, found a three-metre python inspecting her bathroom cabinet.

"I was just going to the bathroom and looked around the corner and there was a massive snake," she said.

The snake had already knocked down a framed picture, smashing the glass.

Worried about the snake hurting itself on the shards, and not keen to let it roam the rest of the house, Ms Barry sought the advice of a wildlife rescue volunteer who passed on the number of a snake handler.

The snake handler, Bill Pledger, made a late night call and took the python to a national park.

Ms Barry suspects the uninvited visitor snuck in via the cat door possibly a day or two earlier and was looking for a feline feast.

"Snakes are about to go into hibernation for the winter," she said.

"They try to get as much food into their system as they can."

Ms Barry said the snake looked well fed, possibly the result of more successful hunting expeditions.

"It was just under three metres, and it was beautiful. It was a good looking snake," she said.

Ms Barry said her cat, which survived a serious illness last year, might have used up another one of its nine lives.
