Ban new mines say Turnbull and Hockey voters

MORE than half the voters in Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's electorate want a moratorium on new coal mines, a poll suggests.

The ReachTel poll of 694 residents of Mr Turnbull's inner Sydney electorate, Wentworth showed 59% backed a global ban on new coal mines.

The poll, funded by The Australia Institute, showed 43% "strongly" supported the ban, 16% supported it, 22% opposed the idea and 8% "strongly opposed" the prospect. It follows this week's rejection by Mr Turnbull of the moratorium idea put in an open letter to the government and signed by prominent scientists, environmental leaders and celebrities.

ReachTel also polled 679 voters in North Sydney, where Joe Hockey's retirement has triggered a by-election and a renewed electoral test for the Coalition under Mr Turnbull.

Some 51% of North Sydney voters said they backed the ban while 27% opposed or "strongly opposed" it.
