Baghdad bombing death toll 131

THE official death toll from a bombing on Sunday in Karada, a neighbourhood of Baghdad, rose sharply yesterday to at least 131.

In an attack claimed by Islamic State, a truck packed with explosives was blown up in the suburb's commercial area while the streets were filled with young families celebrating the end of the daylight fast required during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Many of the victims were women and children inside a multi-storey shopping mall.

Dozens burned to death or suffocated, a police officer told Al Jazeera.
