IN A world littered with autotune and lip synching, Aussie rock legends Mental as Anything are bringing it back to basics when they perform live.

"We want to sound as good as we did on the records," vocalist and keyboardist Andrew "Greedy" Smith told the NewsMail.

"It's become almost an obsession with us."

Smith said despite all their years together, getting a song almost perfect still gives the band a feeling of accomplishment.

"The other night in Darwin we did a great version of The Nips Are Getting Bigger," he said.

"It's the best we have done it in years."

Smith said the feeling coming off stage after the performance was exhilarating. And it's that momentum the band hopes to bring to the region when it plays at the Avondale Homestead Tavern next Saturday.

It's a long time between drinks for the band returning to the region, but it doesn't mean it is not looking forward to it.

"When you got up that way, you were in the area where they have fabulous mud crab sandwiches and it would start to warm up, no matter what time of year," Smith recalled.

He said the band would play the songs people knew, including some of their more popular hits such as Live It Up and Mr Natural.

Despite bringing back their old music, the band's line-up has changed significantly since the 1980s.

Smith and Martin Plaza are the only two remaining from the original line-up, with a number of changes to the rest of the band.
