Australian business backs the "budget we had to have"

AUSTRALIAN business has welcomed Joe Hockey's tough federal budget.

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has described it as "the budget we had to have".

ACCI's chief executive officer, Kate Carnell AO said it would begin to rein in spending and get the budget back on a "credible path to surplus."

"The budget offers genuine structural reform that will help address the underlying structural deficits in recent budgets and begin to reduce the size and scope of government," Ms Carnell said.

Her sentiments were echoed by the Business Council of Australia saying the budget would "lay the foundations for a stronger future."

"The federal budget is a solid start to putting the fiscal strategy back on track," BCA chief executive Jennifer Westacott said.

"While the budget has had to grapple with difficult choices, it should give business and the community greater confidence that Australia is starting to lay down the foundations for a stronger future."
