Australia smash France to take third in Tokyo Sevens

DEFENDING Tokyo Sevens champions Australia had to settle for third this time around after crushing France 31-7 in a play-off.

The Aussies started the final day with a 21-12 defeat of Fiji in the quarter-finals, before losing 35-17 to World Series leaders New Zealand in the semi-finals.

South Africa won its second title of the season after upsetting the Kiwis 24-19 in the final.

The third-place finish meant the Aussies moved three places up the standings from 11th to eighth after the seventh leg of the nine-round series.

New Zealand leads on 132 points, while South Africa is second on 100 and Fiji is third on 98.

The next round will take place in Scotland next month.

Meanwhile, the Aussie women's sevens team finished seventh in the third round of the World Series in China.

After two wins and a loss on day one, the girls made a disappointing start to the final day, losing 17-14 to the US in the Cup quarter-final.

The Aussie women were then beaten 15-14 by Ireland in the Plate semi-final.

The final round of the women's sevens will be held next month in the Netherlands.
