Australia digs deep

THE Lockyer Valley Regional Council has been overwhelmed by the community's response to last week's floods as offers of volunteers and donations continue to pour in.

Mayor Steve Jones said the council and those affected by the flood were humbled by peoples' kindness and willingness to help.

“Lockyer Valley Regional Council has received thousands of offers of assistance and donations from both the local community and from people and businesses around SEQ and Australia,” Cr Jones said.

“People have been incredibly generous offering everything from temporary accommodation, clothing, furniture, white goods and food through to their time, skills and equipment.

“The Lockyer Valley Regional Council and the community sincerely thank everyone for their willingness to lend a hand.”

As the Lockyer Valley community moves towards the recovery phase of this natural disaster, Cr Jones is urging those wishing to volunteer to register with council.

“The recovery process in the Lockyer Valley will be a long road and we will be needing volunteers over the coming weeks and months,” Cr Jones said.

“We are asking volunteers to register with council by calling 1300 005 872, leave their contact details and tell us about special skills or trades, or equipment they have access to.

“As we begin the process of rebuilding our communities, we will be calling on our register of volunteers, matching skills and equipment to particular needs in the community.”

Cr Jones said that through everyone's fantastic efforts, they now had enough food, clothing, furniture and white goods.

“The generosity of people has been amazing, so much so that we have run out of places to store the donated goods and people to distribute them,” Cr Jones said.

“For that reason, we are asking people to hold onto donations of goods for the time being and when we have a particular need in the community, we will ask for that assistance with the help of the media.

“If people wish to make a financial donation to the Lockyer Valley Region, they can do so directly by making a deposit at the National Australia Bank, BSB 084 657, account 188881996.

“For those that have already volunteered or offered donations, please be assured that your help is appreciated and will be essential in the weeks and months to come.”
