AUSTRALIANS were invited to share their favourite 'in the know' travel experiences and destinations in a search uncovering hundreds of hidden gems from across the country - ranging from spectacular waterfalls, hidden beaches and freshwater lagoons to unusual rock formations, off the beaten track accommodation and hidden milk bars.

Hooroo, the new online accommodation brand from the Qantas Group, has announced the top 40 finalists in its nationwide search for Australia's best 'in the know' travel experiences and destinations.

The finalists will now compete to be crowned Australia's greatest 'Secret Spot' via public vote.

An expert judging panel consisting of well-respected travel and lifestyle influencers selected the top 40 'Secret Spots' which are being put to public vote.

Hooroo Secret Spots judge, Bondi Vet and The Living Room presenter Chris Brown said the judging panel had faced some tough decisions.

"I love to discover and explore these wonders of Australia when I travel and being part of the Hooroo judging panel has definitely ignited a new desire to travel and see some of these places that I have never heard of before," he said.

Hooroo's Head of Marketing Lija Wilson said the competition started with the thought that Australian locals knew the most about travelling around our great country.

"Everyone has their favourite places that they have stumbled upon in past travels as well as a list of local
haunts that you share with people who come to visit," she said.

"We're thrilled to have uncovered so many amazing places and can't wait to share these with our community of passionate travellers.

"It's up to the public to vote what they believe is the best Australia 'Secret Spot'!"

Voting is now open and closes at 5pm (AEDST) on 17 December 2012.

Australia's top five 'Secret Spots' will be announced in January, with over $14,500 of
prizes being awarded.

The top five nominated locations, as voted for by the Australian public, will also earn the coveted title of an official Hooroo 'Secret Spot'.
