THE Sunshine Coast will earn "millions of bucks" when Maroochydore hosts the 2016 Australian Life Saving Championships.

Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey visited Maroochydore Surf Club yesterday to formally announce the date - April 16 to 24.

Sunshine Coast Councillor Jason O'Pray highlighted the region's pedigree at hosting blue ribbon sporting events and said small businesses were already preparing for the influx of visitors for the Australian titles.

"They are beside themselves, they are ecstatic that these events are coming to town,'' Cr O'Pray said.

"They know that they're going to be choccas for that week in April.

"Everybody will make a buck out of this and that's really what it's all about."

Cr O'Pray said it will be the third time that the national titles have been held on the Sunshine Coast.

Mooloolaba hosted the event in 1950, followed by Maroochydore in 1980.

He said that sand would be plentiful for the titles in light of a recent $2 million project to replenish the beach last year following significant erosion.

"For the region, and the whole of the business community, and the surf lifesavers of the country, we will not let that disappoint anybody," Cr O'Pray said.

"That sand is there to stay. We will have an enormous amount of sand there for the 2016 Australian championships."

Cr O'Pray said the region was on track to become the regional capital for events in Australia.

It already had the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, the Outrigging World Championship and Tough Mudder.
