AUDI has powered its latest pocket rocket into Australia.

The first S3 Sedan is on sale for $62,200 plus on-roads.

And if it's anything like the Sportback version (which is $2300 cheaper), the S3 Sedan should be nothing short of outstanding.

While the Sportback and Sedan share the same Christian name, they don't share a panel. The new Sedan is 25mm lower and has a 6mm short wheelbase.

But they do have the same powerplant and performance characteristics - a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine which can haul to 100kmh from standstill in five seconds.

Basic equipment includes xenon-plus headlights with LED daytime running lights and LED tail lights, sat nav and Audi's MMI touch system, automatic parking with front and rear sensors with rear view camera, 18-inch alloys, body kit, 'S' exhaust system with quad tailpipes and sports suspension, Nappa leather seats, dual zone air con and a flat-bottom sports steering wheel.

The S performance package is available for $4990,and includes LED headlights, Bang and Olufsen sound system, Audi magnetic ride, diamond-shaped stitching on the seats, 19-inch alloy wheels as well as front and rear brake calipers in S design red.

"With the dynamic styling of the new Audi A3 Sedan as a starting point, the new S3 model was always going to have a striking presence on the road," said Audi Australia managing director Andrew Doyle said.

"However, there is much more depth to this accomplished sports sedan than just looks. It offers enthusiasts a stirring drive, thanks to its powerful engine, lightweight chassis and quattro all-wheel-drive layout."
